It's Leisure Pool planting week!

Beekeeping demo

Pupils from Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools across Perth are helping Beautiful Perth volunteers create the annual floral display at Perth Leisure Pool this week (12-15 June).  The theme this year is ‘Trees, Bees and Birds’; the design is based on an outdoor environmental classroom, with a table and seats made from reused large cable reels*.  The display features native Scottish apple trees planted in gabion baskets* which are also being made into ‘bug hotels’. The trees have been sourced locally* and include varieties like ‘Lass of Gowrie’.

The pupils will be helping plant annual plants of many colours, echoing the logo of the Perth is the Place campaign for the City of Culture bid. As they help out, the pupils will learn about biodiversity and sustainable living whilst they have fun planting the display. Members of the Perthshire Beekeepers Association will be on site on Tuesday and Wednesday to demonstrate their craft and tell the fascinating story of bees and their importance in pollination.

Beautiful Perth Chairman John Summers said “This is a fantastic project for our volunteers. We love working with the school children who bring such enthusiasm to everything they do! It’s also a great partnership project for us, and we’re very grateful to everyone who is helping out – to BT Openreach and Maccaferri who donated the reels and gabion baskets, to the Council's Community Greenspace and Community Payback teams for getting things ready for us and to the beekeepers who give up their own time to tell the children (and us somewhat older participants) all about their craft. Appropriately enough with the ‘birds’ theme, we’ll be tweeting our progress during the week, using the hashtag #perthpoolplanting.”

The participating schools are: City of Perth Early Learning Centre, Craigie PS, Fairview School, Goodlyburn PS, Kinnoull PS, Inch View School, Letham PS, Perth Academy, Perth College UHI Nursery, Perth High School and Viewlands PS.

*The cable reels were kindly donated by BT Openreach and the gabion baskets by Maccaferri UK & Ireland. The equipment was prepared for us by PKC Community Payback.  The Apple Trees were sourced from Plants for a Purpose & Appletreeman in Bankfoot. a “wee, green, family business, rooted in Highland Perthshire”
