A busy April

New heather beds, Riverside Park, Perth Scotland

April was a very busy month for our volunteers. We've been working hard to make sure Perth is as beautiful as possible for the exciting summer ahead.

One of our biggest projects is creating a new heather collection at Riverside Park. We're working closely with Perth and Kinross Council and we've had help from volunteers of all ages - one of our recent action days involved 16 volunteers with ages ranging from seven to 80. The team - Aaron, Danny, Zoe, Kim, Harriet, Bill, Jim, Bob, Isla, Sylvia, Margaret, Norman, John, Dave, Ian and Tom carefully laid down 200 bags of compost around the heathers to keep the weeds down and promote the good health of the plants. Tom Lowdon, who’s leading the Heather Collection project for us, declared: “The heather beds have never looked so spectacular. Four young volunteers, Aaron, Danny, Zoe and Kim enjoyed the work so much they came back in the afternoon for seconds!”

Also in April we were delighted to learn we have successfully secured funding from Perth and Kinross Council’s 2014 Community Challenge Fund to erect Beautiful Perth banners at four main routes into the City. The banners, which will also promote key activities happening in Perth, will be located on the Edinburgh, Crieff, Dundee and Glasgow roads. This is another part of our on-going effort to spruce up the Fair City ahead of the Ryder Cup, Commonwealth Games Baton Relay and the judging of Britain in Bloom 2014.

Our Chairman John Summers says: “The new heather beds are looking fabulous now, and the new banners will give a warm welcome to visitors to Perth. We've got a lot to do this year and we're looking for more volunteers to help with our projects. You don’t have to be a gardening expert to get involved and you don't have to make a regular commitment, just come along when you can to help out with things like weeding, planting and pruning. It's great fun and we welcome people of all ages and abilities.”

Please get in touch if you'd like to help with this or any of our other projects.
