Kinnoull School garden takes shape

Smile for the cameras!

After a highly successful fundraising campaign, we have joined forces with pupils, parents and staff from Perth’s Kinnoull Primary School to revamp the school’s front garden. Work is well underway to transform the garden, which fronts onto the busy Dundee Road, into an attractive area that pupils, staff and parents can use and everyone in the area can enjoy. Kinnoull Parent Council, Parent Association and Beautiful Perth have worked hard fundraising throughout the past year and have securing grants from Perth’s Common Good Fund, Perth & Kinross Council’s Environment Challenge Fund and 2014 Community Challenge Fund and Awards for All.

Our Chairman John Summers is delighted to see the garden progressing so well “This is a very exciting project for our Beautiful Perth volunteers. It’s been great to have been involved from the early stages, helping shape the plans using the excellent ideas developed by the pupils themselves. The new garden will be another jewel on the Left Bank where our volunteers are actively working on sites from the new heather collection in Riverside Park and a shrubbery at Back Wynd car park, to roadside beds along Dundee Road and at Camilla Bell Park.”

Head Teacher Jennifer Sorrie believes the work will make a huge difference to the school: "The project has involved the pupils from the outset.  They wanted the garden to be a place to enjoy, learn and play in as well as being an attractive view for the many tourists and local community who pass the school each day. It is wonderful to see their ideas realised!  We look forward to the summer term when we can begin planting and making full use of our garden for learning and recreation."

Perth & Kinross Council Convener of Lifelong Learning Councillor Bob Band added: "The garden offers a great opportunity for children to learn about plants. They will also find out about the natural environment and the importance of water and wildlife conservation. Hopefully in years to come they will put their learning into practice in helping to keep Perth and Kinross green."

Beautiful Perth Chairman John Summers is delighted to see the garden progressing so well, he commented: “This is a very exciting project for our Beautiful Perth volunteers.

Picture: School staff, parents and pupils from the school's Eco Committee gathered with Beautiful Perth volunteers and contractor Alex Butter for a press photocall on Friday 27 March. They were celebrating the completion of the first phase of the garden which has seen the new walls, the paths completed and fresh turf laid.
