Judging for Beautiful Scotland

Planting at the Leisure Pool

Two independent judges visited Perth on Monday 5th August to assess the City for this year’s Beautiful Scotland Awards. Perth is up against stiff competition as it is one of 55 cities, towns and villages that have entered the national competition this year.

The judges assessed three themes - Horticultural Achievement, Environmental Responsibility and Community Participation. They toured the City accompanied by Beautiful Perth Trustees and were greeted at the end of the tour by Provost Liz Grant, who hosted a lunch at the Mercure Hotel attended by Beautiful Perth volunteers, sponsors, partners and supporters.

Over the past year our volunteers and partners have dedicated their time to enhancing the attractiveness, cleanliness and sustainability of the Fair City, and the judges’ visit represents the culmination of a great deal of hard work. Chairman John Summers summed up the excitement:

“Our volunteers and partners have done so much for Perth, pulling together to improve and enhance the local environment with floral displays, local community clean ups and tackling problems like litter. We have a tremendous record of success in the national ‘in bloom’ competitions in the past but we took a break last year when we had lots of other things to prepare for, like the Olympic torch, the Queen’s visit  and  Jubilee Celebrations and of course the restoration of City status to Perth.

“Now we’re back and hoping to make a big impact once again. Ironically, given that we are so proud to be a City, we are entered into the national competition in the ‘large town’ category, because it’s organised by population size. But that hasn’t lessened our ambitions – in fact, we’re even more determined to shine!”

The outcome of the judging will be announced at a Beautiful Scotland event in Aberdeen in September.

Keep Scotland Beautiful is Scotland’s leading charity for local environmental issues.  More information about the national Awards can be found on its website.
