A fond farewell to Euna

John and Euna

Members and former members of the Beautiful Perth committee gathered at the Royal George Hotel on 10 March to celebrate the remarkable contribution made by our former Chairman, Euna Scott, who has  stepped down after 25 years with the committee.

In 1989 the City was described in the press as a ‘Foul City, not Fair’ because of the poor state of the local environment. That stinging criticism galvanised local action and the first 'Perth in Bloom' came into being in 1990, with Euna as a member of the inaugural committee. Since then Perth has won many prestigious national and international awards for its floral displays and environmental excellence, including Gold Medals and major awards in Beautiful Scotland, Britain in Bloom, Entente Florale, Gardening Scotland, Tatton Park and World in Bloom competitions. Perth’s local economy has benefitted significantly as a result, as the City gained a well-deserved reputation as a beautiful place to live, work and visit. Euna was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her services to Perthshire.

Beautiful Perth’s present Chairman, John Summers OBE, says Euna’s contribution to the charity will be greatly missed:

“To Bloom groups across Perth & Kinross, the name Euna Scott is synonymous with horticultural excellence. We on the Beautiful Perth group have been especially fortunate that she has been so closely involved. She was a huge support to me when I succeeded her as Chairman in 2011. Euna is an absolute powerhouse, and has been a driving force behind the tremendous work done by our volunteers. It is no exaggeration to say that Perth would not be the same without her efforts over the past quarter century!

“We will miss her from the committee and wish her well with any new future ventures. As well as her role as Senior Officer in the Council’s Community Greenspace team, Euna is now concentrating her considerable energy and talents on Westbank Enterprises, a horticultural social enterprise based at the plant nursery on Jeanfield Road in Perth. The nursery provides employment training and work experience for disadvantaged people from across the county. Beautiful Perth will source most of its plants there and we look forward to working closely with Euna in that context.”
